Important Information About LVN License Verification

Though many things seem up in the air related to health care in this country, one thing that is certain is this: an LVN hired by a hospital, doctor‘s office, or long-term care facility must be licensed. LVN license verification is one of the most important actions a health care facility can take.

Licensed vocational nurses, known in some states as licensed practical nurses, must graduate from an accredited school in order to sit for their licensure exam. This exam, known as the National Council Licensure Examination, or NCLEX-PN, is mandatory.

Practical nursing programs are offered by private and community colleges, as well as trade schools. It is also possible to take the necessary nursing classes at an accredited online school, but the clinical aspect of the program must be done at a medical facility.

Many people choose an LVN program either as an accelerated way to get into the job market, or as a mid-career change. Competition for program spots can be tough. But there are often scholarships and grants available to help defray costs. Pursuing an LVN degree is less costly than an RN degree, and the job market forecast is for continued growth.

A licensed practical nurse can work in a wide variety of settings, including hospitals, doctor’s offices, and long-term care facilities. They are under the supervision of an RN or an MD. An LVN is responsible for vital signs, removing sutures, changing dressings, and educating family members on the needs of the patient. LVN license verification assures medical facilities that the nurse being hired is certified in all these skills.

While licensed practical nurses in most states can do injections, they must be certified for intravenous therapy. There are also certifications specific to gerontology. Long-term care facilities allow an LVN to be a charge nurse, as well as instruct nursing assistants.

After graduating from an approved program and passing their NCLEX-PN, an LVN must take continuing education courses in order to renew the license. Facilities, hospitals, and doctor’s offices must check with their state board of nursing to verify that an LVN has a current license that is in good standing.
